A woman who accused Peter Nygard of sexual assault told his Toronto trial it took her decades to go to police because she feared the fashion mogul could ruin her reputation and chances at a career in the industry. The fifth and final complainant at Nygard’s trial said Tuesday that she decided to come forward years later to help other vulnerable women speak out against predators. “This isn’t for me, I’m older now,” said the complainant, whose identity is covered by a publication ban. “This is for a young generation of women who are coming up, and they need to know they can report this straight away to prevent these predators from developing.”Nygard, the founder of a now-defunct international women’s clothing company, is accused of using his position in the fashion industry to lure women and girls. The 82-year-old has pleaded not guilty to five counts of sexual assault and one count of forcible confinement in alleged ...

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden’s efforts to tamp down tensions in the escalating war between Israel and Hamas faced massive setbacks even before he departed for the Middle East on Tuesday, as Jordan called off the president’s planned summit with Arab leaders after a deadly explosion at a Gaza hospital killed hundreds. Biden now will visit only Israel and will postpone his travel to Jordan, a White House official said as Biden departed. The postponement of the Amman summit comes after Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas withdrew from the scheduled meetings in protest of the attacks, which the Hamas-run Health Ministry in Gaza blamed on an Israeli airstrike. The Israeli military said it had no involvement and pinned the blame on a misfired Palestinian rocket.“This war and this aggression are pushing the region to the brink,” Ayman Safadi, Jordan’s foreign minister, told al-Mamlaka TV, a state-run network. He said Jordan would only host the summit when all participants agreed...

Life in Qatar is serene and frequently lavish, and it is easy to adjust to the Persian Gulf lifestyle of Doha’s magnificent glass and steel skyscrapers, fine restaurants and posh comforts. And on Friday it was also a symbol of just how mondo-bizarro the world of the Middle East has become. Two men of state, wearing the fashions of their respective trades — one in a dark blue business suit, the other in the white flowing robe and headdress — stood side by side at lecterns in the posh, modern comfort of a grand room of Qatar’s capital. They talked to reporters in subdued tones about the horrific hell and inhumane human conduct that was being allowed to happen a thousand miles away, in a people-packed soda straw of a place called Gaza and its larger neighbor, Israel.America’s Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani had been talking privately of their multiple efforts to end the I...
