This article includes graphic images and depictions of death.Israel’s Defense Minister Yoav Gallant used genocidal language and ordered mass war crimes in the occupied Gaza Strip on Monday in response to Hamas’s weekend assault and massacre of Israeli civilians, setting the stage for a large-scale escalation of the violence that has already led to the killing of at least 800 Israelis and more than 500 Palestinians.Gallant said that he had ordered “a complete siege of the Gaza Strip,” which is home to 2.2 million Palestinians, nearly half of them children. “There will be no electricity, no food, no fuel, everything is closed,” he said. “We are fighting human animals, and we act accordingly.”What Gallant ordered — the collective punishment of a civilian population — amounts to a war crime under international law, as well as potentially a crime against humanity and the crime of genocide, some international law experts have pointed out. Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 04:53:55 GMT

BRUSSELS (AP) — The European Union on late Monday reversed an earlier announcement by an EU commissioner that the bloc was “immediately” suspending aid for Palestinian authorities and instead said it would urgently review such assistance in the wake of the attacks on Israel by Hamas.“There will be no suspension of payments” at the moment, a terse European Commission statement said late Monday, five hours after EU Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi had said that all payments from the development program for Palestinians would be “immediately suspended. All projects put under review. All new budget proposals … postponed until further notice.”No immediate explanation for the reversal was given. A full European Commission statement always trumps a statement from an EU commissioner, but the reversal on a 691 million-euro ($730 million) program capped an embarrassing day at the EU’s executive at a time of extreme geopolitical sensitivities.THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Poland’s highly anticipated — and only — election debate descended into farce on Monday as the format of the show on state TV ruled out the possibility of … any actual debate.Instead, opposition leader Donald Tusk, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and other candidates scrambled to beat a one-minute buzzer to answer a series of questions put by their hosts.Marketed as a key moment before Sunday’s general election, the debate on TVP’s main channel already lacked appeal after Poland’s de facto leader Jarosław Kaczyński pulled out last week.Viewers who tuned in were subjected to a format that had about as much appeal as a low-budget daytime quiz show, in which the questions were blatantly biased in favor of the party in power. Arguably, the only thing the Q&A session showcased was the steep decline of media freedom in a nation that overthrew communism and embraced democracy over 30 years ago.“Will it be a debate? No, it’s not even verging on a deb...
