Dear Stella Kyriakides, commissioner for health and food safety,The ongoing revision of the EU Animal Welfare legislation represents a unique opportunity to propose legislation for ending the breeding and killing of animals on fur farms. Since there are no economically viable alternatives to the current housing system based on cages, a prohibition of fur farming is the only acceptable solution to ensure the welfare of fur animals. In May 2020, the European Commission adopted the Farm to Fork Strategy, announcing its intention to revise the current animal welfare legislation to align it with the latest scientific evidence. As scientists, we applaud this urgent initiative. In this letter, we want to especially focus on the serious welfare problems on fur farms. There is no doubt that the practice of farming animals for fur breaches the most fundamental principles of animal welfare. It has never been possible to design a farming system in line with the species-specific needs of animals b...Wednesday’s high school roundup/scores: Douglas George tosses no-hitter for Boston Latin

Without three starters, the Boston Celtics win against the Toronto Raptors at the TD Garden 97-93Chicago Bulls’ pattern of slow starts continues in a 105-92 loss in Milwaukee that locks in their postseason seeding

The opening minutes of Wednesday’s loss to the Milwaukee Bucks were an echo of an all-too-familiar pattern for the Chicago Bulls.Even without Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Bucks put the Bulls on their heels within minutes, and the offense had no answers. DeMar DeRozan missed two shots at the start of a 3-for-12 night, Patrick Williams and Patrick Beverley clanked 3-pointers off the iron and Zach LaVine made only 1 of 6 attempts from long range.By the end of the first quarter, the Bulls had scored only 21 points as they shot a brutal 9-for-24 (37.5%) from the field. The 105-92 loss that followed the sluggish start locked in the Bulls as the 10th seed in the Eastern Conference, meaning they will travel to face the ninth seed — likely the Toronto Raptors — for a play-in tournament game next Wednesday. And with the stakes raised in a single-elimination game, the Bulls know they can’t repeat the same first-quarter weakness if they hope to stay alive in the postseason.&...Celtics react to clinching No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs:

Malcolm Brogdon needed all of two words and a split second to share what clinching the No. 2 seed in the East meant to him Wednesday night.“That’s everything,” he said.Brogdon’s 29 points spurred the Celtics to their 97-93 win over the Raptors at TD Garden, which, in combination with the Bucks’ win over the Bulls, solidified Milwaukee and Boston as the top seeds in the East for the second straight season. This year, however, will be Brogdon’s first go-round in Boston, something he treasures. Brogdon believes he’s found exactly what he was hoping for after being traded to the Celtics last summer following a difficult two-year stint in Indiana.Jaylen Brown #7 of the Boston Celtics holds up the Red Auerbach Award he won before the NBA game against the Toronto Raptors at the TD Garden on Wednesday in Boston, MA. When the Celtics dropped three consecutive games to the Warriors last June to lose the NBA Finals, it was clear they needed another playmaking guard and scoring punch off the bench to help them get over the hump.A few weeks later, Brad Stevens addressed it when he orchestrated a trade with the Pacers for Malcolm Brogdon in what was viewed as one of the best moves of the summer across the league. As the regular season winds down, that deal has proven to be worth the hype. Brogdon is the frontrunner to be named the NBA’s sixth man of the year and a significant reason why the Celtics are championship favorites when they begin their playoff pursuit next week.Wednesday was yet another big mark on Brogdon’s sixth man candidacy. With Jayson Tatum out as he continues to nurse a nagging hip injury and gets some extra rest before the playoffs and Jaylen Brown struggling through a tough shooting night, a shorthanded Celtics squad once again showed why they’re so much more than their two All-Sta...North Korea warns ‘offensive action’ over allies’ drills

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea on Thursday threatened unspecified “offensive action” over the expansion of U.S. military exercises with rival South Korea as President Joe Biden’s special representative for North Korea flew to Seoul for talks with allies over the North’s growing nuclear threat. The North Korean comments came a day after the United States flew nuclear-capable B-52 bombers to the Korean Peninsula for joint aerial exercises with South Korean warplanes in their latest show of force against the North, which portrays the allies’ drills as invasion rehearsals. Animosity heightened in recent weeks as the pace of both the U.S.-South Korean military exercises and the North Korean weapons demonstrations increased in a cycle of tit-for-tat. The North’s official Korean Central News Agency said the United States and South Korea’s military exercises and the deployment of advanced U.S. military assets have turned the Korean Peninsula into a “huge powder magazine, which can be ...Violence erupts at Jerusalem holy site for a 2nd night

JERUSALEM (AP) — Violence resumed for a second straight night in Jerusalem on Wednesday when Palestinian worshippers barricaded themselves inside Al-Aqsa Mosque at the Old City’s sensitive compound and Israeli police used force to remove dozens of worshippers. The unrest was less intense than the previous night. But the situation remained combustible as Muslims marked the Ramadan holy month and Jews began the weeklong Passover holiday. The Islamic Waqf authorities, which manages the compound, said police fired stun grenades and rubber bullets to disperse the crowds. The Israeli police said that “dozens of law-breaking juveniles” had fomented chaos, throwing rocks and other objects at officers and compelling police to act to restore “security, law and order.”More Palestini...Latest news
